Gerald Turner:
And in your business, the CRO Business, do you think at this point there is a lot of consolidation going on, or are the big boys becoming larger via acquisition, or what is your sense there about what is going on?Helen Colquhoun:
I think there is a lot of acquisitions going on, so I think what is happening is that the micro-business and the small businesses are being acquired by the middle-sized and larger businesses, and I think that is reflective of the larger businesses having a much tougher time differentiating themselves in the market place, so what they are doing is buying small niche CROs so they say, “hey look, now we have got a specialist oncology group”, or “a specialist medical device group”, or whatever it happens to be.I think the other thing that is happening is that there is a desire to build a large medical device CRO, whether that will ever happen as a stand alone entity, i.e., separate completely from pharmaceutical CRO businesses, I don’t know, but I think there is evidence that people are trying to knit together large medical device CROs from lots of little businesses. Also some of the middle sized businesses are trying to turn their focus into medical devices. So I think there is a lot of consolidation going on, and of course that makes it tougher for the small businesses which feeds back into my reason for wanting to be … you know, I didn’t want to be the last CRO standing, because I thought if I was we wouldn’t be standing for very long.
Gerald Turner:
No, no, I understand that.Selling a Business. Helen Colquhoun, CEO of Pleaid Devices talks us through the decision she took to appoint an investment banker to sell her contract research organisation (CRO).
